Observing Log for Mike Durkin

6/21/2020 about 12:00-1:30AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 5/10, Seeing 2/5
Temperature: about 60-70 degrees
Equipment: Synguider II, AstroTrac TT320X-AG and 50mm guidescope

Kind of crummy observing conditions, but I did want to at least test out the Synguider II that I just got.
I decided to use the Astrotrac. I only polar aligned very roughly by just using my eyes. Focusing was
a little tricky, but I think if I leave the focus on the scope as is, it should not be too hard to get a
star again.
I pointed the guidescope to Arcturus. The disaply of the Synguider is a bit faint and I had to take
off my glasses in order to see the text. Additionally if I am not using a diagonal, the angle of the display
may be very awkward.
Once I had the star visible, trying to calibrate didn't work. I was afraid that the autoguiding port on the
Astrotrac was broken. However as I was about to pack up, I noticed that the cable for the Astrotrac is a
little different. It has 6 pins on one side and 8 on the other. So after I swapped out the cable for the
guide port and used the one provided with the Astrotrac, I was able to calibrate. And I was happy to see that
the Synguider was able to skip over Declination guiding since the Astrotrac and Star Adventurer can only track
in RA. I did notice however that the star was drifting much quicker in 1 axis that I would have liked.
hopefully that is just because I didn't do a proper polar alignment and this would be much less of an issue
with better alignment.
Also had a cat hanging around for attention
