Observing Log for Mike Durkin

3/5/2006 4:00AM-6:00AM
Robert Moses State Park, NY, about 30 degrees
Transparency: 10/10, seeing: ?/10
10x50 binoculars

Some members of the AOS e-mailed that they were heading down to the beach to try to catch Comet Pojmanski (C/2006 A1). It was very weird seeing Scorpius by the horizon in the winter time. Jupiter and Venus were also very obvious in the sky.
We started out mostly using binoculars. I used Starry Night Pro to find out where the comet was supposed to be. When I looked with binoculars, I thought I saw what looked like an out of focus star. Shortly after, one of the AOS members confirms that what I saw was the comet. Dennis said that he could see the tail. I may have barely made it out in by binoculars.
I started setting up my 5" Mak to try to take some piggyback shots, but my tripod tipped over and one of the legs broke.
As the sun was coming up I finished up the roll of film in my camera by taking some pictures of the tower and a building with Venus in the frame. I placed the camera on top of the car for the pictures.
