Observing Log for Mike Durkin

7/30/2017 about 8:000PM-10:30PM
Jones Beach Nature Center, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about 55-65 degrees
Equipment: Celestron Ultima 8 with PEC

An AOS members only session at the Nature Center. A rather good showing, maybe 10-15 people were there.
Warmed up by looking at the Moon, Jupiter and Saturn. Linda P. had mentioned a Jovian moon coming out of the shadow but her time seems to have been off, so I missed the event.
I had originally planned on doing some of the fainter variable stars, but the sky was very bright for most of the evening. Instead I ended up showing some items to a new member who was talking with Mike K. I showed her M22, the Owl Cluster, and the star cluster associated with M16, however the nebula for M16 was not visible in the eyepiece. I had also tried to find the Wild Duck cluster, but was not able to find it.
I wrapped up before 10:30 PM, but would have liked to have stayed later since a lot of people were still there. I had to leave since it was a Sunday and I had work the next day.

7/29-30/2017 about 11:30PM-1:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 10/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: about 60-70 degrees
Equipment: Canon Rebel T3i

Been a long time, but I finally did some DSLR photometry. After a lousy looking day, the sky conditions improved greatly. I think I even may have detected a little bit of the Milky Way at the zenith.
So quick DSLR photometry of R Lyr and P Cyg.

7/3/2017 about 10:00PM-11:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 1-8/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about 65-75 degrees
Equipment: Stellarvue 70mm refractor

Measured variable star Z UMa, although when copmaring my measurement with others, I seem to be about 0.5 magnitudes fainter, so I am not sure I should report it.
Also looked at the moon and Jupiter. There were some ridges near Sinus Iridium. Also a nice effect by the south pole where some mountain tops were lit up and it looked detached from the rest of the moon.
