Observing Log for Mike Durkin 6/25/2017 about 8:30-10:00PM Locust Valley, NY Transparency: 2-7/10, Seeing 3/5 Temperature: about 60-70 degrees Equipment: Celestron 8 inch SCT I wanted to go back and try using the 8 inch for just visual observing, maybe even do some faint variable star measurements. Unfortunately I only got a quick look at Jupiter and Arcturus before clouds came in and ruined the night. 6/24/2017 about 10:00PM-11:30PM Locust Valley, NY Transparency: 8/10, Seeing 5/5 Temperature: about 65-75 degrees Equipment: Stellarvue 70mm refractor Measured variable stars Z UMa, R Boo and V Oph. Also took a quick look at Jupiter. At maximum magnification (7.4mm) I was able to clearly make out the 2 equitorial belts and all 4 moons. Interesting to see that Io and Ganymede was very clote to each other. I also tried to find Comet Johnson, but was unable to see it. This is also assuming that Sky Safari had it in the right place. I also tried to see globular cluster M107 near V Oph, however I was not able to make it out, although I might have detected hints of it with averted vision. 6/11-12/2017 about 10:00PM-12:00AM Locust Valley, NY Transparency: 7/10, Seeing 3/5 Temperature: about 75-85 degrees Equipment: Hutech modified Canon Rebel T3i DSLR photometry of g Her and X Her. Since the targets were near the zenith, I had the problem of alternating bright and dim images. I go around it by making the f-stop a bit higher, approximately f/6. I also tried making the radius of the stars a bit smaller, approximately 10-12 pixels rather than the 12-16 pixels I have been doing. 6/11/2017 about 9:00-9:15PM Locust Valley, NY Transparency: 7/10, Seeing 3/5 Temperature: about 75-85 degrees Equipment: none I tried to see the clouds from the rocket launch from Wallops Flight Facility. However the launch was scrubbed. 6/9/2017 about 11:30PM-12:45AM Locust Valley, NY Transparency: 8/10, Seeing 4/5 Temperature: about 65-75 degrees Equipment: 10x50 binoculars Measured variable stars T UMa, TV UMa, ST UMa and RY UMa.
