Observing Log for Mike Durkin
1/16/23 about 7:30-8:30PM, and 10:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing ?/5
Temperature: 30-40 degrees
Equipment: 70mm Stellarvue refractor
Variable star observing. Tries SS Cyg first, but I was not able to see so it
must have been dimmer than about magnitude 10.0.
Measured R And, AQ And, and RW Cep.
Later on I took a naked eye measurement of α Ori.
1/15/23 about 8:00-8:15PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 4/10, Seeing ?/5
Temperature: 30-35 degrees
Equipment: 10x50 binoculars
Conditions were too cloudy to do anything significant, so just looked at a couple of
clusters in Orion that I read about in a recent astronomy magazine.
Collinder 69 - the head of Orion. I saw the "reclining chair" asterism mentioned
in the article, although some of the dimmer stars were hard to make out.
Collinder 70 - the belt of Orion centered on Alnilam. Didn't seem like a well
defined cluster because it is so spread out, but I was able to see quite a few
stars in this region.
1/1/23 about 6:00PM-8:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 2/5
Temperature: 35-45 degrees
Equipment: Celestron Ultima 8 with PEC
Tested using the ASIAir to take videos for processing later. I took videos of Jupiter,
the Moon, and Mars. I started out using a 5x Barlow lens on Jupiter and the Moon, but
that might be too much magnification. While on the moon I switched to the smaller
Barlow lens, I forget if it was 2.5x or 3x. I believe that the lunar craters I
imaged were Billialdus (large Barlow) and Copernicus (smaller Barlow)
Initially I think the video files are OK, although focusing is a bit tough and I think
the seeing wasn't too good. I'll have to see how the files look after processing
though to be sure.
