Observing Log for Mike Durkin
10/27-28/2023 about 10:30PM-1:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about 55-65 degrees
Equipment: Celestron Ultima 8 with PEC
Basically a full moon tonight, but I wanted to get some more practice using the
ASIAir.
First did some visual observing of Jupter and the moon with the 6.7mm eyepiece.
Jupiter showed all 4 moons plus some background stars in the same field of view.
I also took a look at the moon, which did have some craters in shadows near the
edge. I took a couple of pictures with my iPhone, which came out imuch better than I
expected. I also tried to take a picture of Jupiter with my iPhone and that
did not come out as well.
Then I set up the ASIAir to start taking pictures with the ASI 174 mini. I took
a few videos of Jupiter and the moon using the camera and a 5x Barlow lens.

Then just for curiosity I wanted to see if I could take a longer image of the
area around the Flaming Star nebula. I'm a bit concerned that the plate solve
feature on the ASIAir didn't quite work the way I was expecting, but I'll have
to check again when using a DSLR.
I should try out using the RGB color filters on Jupiter the next time I try to
take a video of Jupiter or Saturn.
