Observing Log for Mike Durkin

2/27/2011 about 11:30AM-1:30PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 8/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: about 40-50 degrees
Equipment: Coronado PST, 127mm Mak, and new DFK 31AU03 AS camera

Second day of testing the DFK 31AU03 AS camera.
Started with the 127mm Mak and a white light filter on the sun. I was able to get focus, but after processing I think I am getting double images:

Sun 11-02-27 12-01-59
An image of the sun through a 127mm Mak and a white light filter. The camera used was a DMK 31AU03.AS.

I see double sunspots in the raw AVI file, so I believe that this might be a problem with the camera rather than a processing artifact.
After that I again tried with the Hydrogen α scope. This time I was able to get focus with a barlow and a dark jacket to shield out light from the laptop. But the finges are still there.
I think I will need to return this camera.

2/26/2011 about 12:00PM-3:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 6/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: about 40-50 degrees
Equipment: Coronado PST and new DFK 31AU03 AS camera

First test using the new DFK 31AU03 AS camera in my Hydrogen α telescope.
So far I'm not too pleased with the results. I am seeing fringes or something like Newton's rings I also had some trouble trying to focus with or without a barlow lens.
