Observing Log for Mike Durkin
1/20/2013 about 8:00PM-1:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about ?? degrees
Equipment: Hutech modified Canon Rebel XT
DSLR photometry of ε Aur, X Per, ρ Per, BU Gem, and α Ori. After crunching though
the numbers it looks like BU Gem was too red. And it does look like if I really wanted to
I could probably get B filter magnitudes as well.
1/19/2013 about 8:00PM-10:00PM
Southold, NY
Transparency: 7/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about 45-50 degrees
Equipment: 14 inch SCT
I went out to Custer Observatory for a Celtic Harp performance.
Bill C. "drafted" me to help with public outreach at the Susan Rose Observatory. I started looking at
M42/M43, but then switched over to Jupiter which seemed to get a better response from people. Jupiter
had 4 moons, all on one side of the planet. Bill and I also think that we saw the Great Red Spot, but
it so, it looked rather pale. Multiple bands were also easily visible.
After that I looked at star clusters M35 with 2158, and the Eskimo Nebula (NGC 2392). The nebula looked
very small, but non-stellar as expected. I didn't really spend must time trying to see if I could
pick up any fine details.
1/18/2013 about 11:45PM-2:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 6/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: about 25-35 degrees
Equipment: 70mm Stellarvue refractor
Observed variable stars W Ori, Z UMa, RS Per, R Per, RT Aur, and UU Aur.
