Observing Log for Mike Durkin
2/9/2019 8:00PM-10:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: about 25-30 degrees
Equipment: Hutech modified DSLR
I wanted to see if I could work on the 500mm Bower lens today to see if getting any sort of pretty picture astrophotograpy was reasonable.
I took images of the area around the Flame plus the Horsehead nebulae for one image, and then the area around the Orion nebula for another picture.
There were some dust donuts which the flat frame won't fix because the dust
must have moved before I took the flats.
I don't think this lens will be any good for quality astrophotos. It was basically impossible to get
the stars to look nearly round. The focus of the lens is also extrmely sensitive, so after some minutes
the stars would star to look a bit oblong and even more deformed than when they are closest to best
focus.
I should give up on this lens for anything except maybe photometry, but even for that I may have other lenses
which may be able to get stars as faint.
