Observing Log for Mike Durkin
6/21-22/2019 11:30PM-12:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: about 60-70 degrees
Equipment: Stellarvue 70mm refractor
Measured variable stars Z UMa and S UMa.
First chance to test out the new eyepiece that I got from George S. My initial reaction is that I do
like the eyepiece. Even though this lens is 6.7mm, it may be better to use compared to the 4.7mm Plossl
I usually use for very high magnification.
After looking at the variable stars, I tried the eyepiece on Jupiter. It was better than I had originally
expected. I was able to easily see 3 moons. The belts were also visible. After that I tried the 2x
and 3x barlow lens (125x and 188x). THe belts showed more detail. Also looking at Sky Safari, Europa
was transiting and it's shadow was supposed to be visible. I might have glimpsed the shadow at first,
but as it moved toward the middle of Jupiter's disk, it was much easier to see. The Great Red Spot was
also supposed to be visible, but I am not certain I saw it.
A cat came by for a bit and wanted some attention.
