Observing Log for Mike Durkin
7/13/2019 about 10:00PM-12:00AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 10/10, Seeing 4-5/5
Temperature: 75-85 degrees
Equipment: Stellarvue 70mm
Measured variable stars Z UMa, T UMa, Y UMa and S UMa.
After that looked at Jupiter with the 6.7mm eyepiece and 3x Barlow. The Galilean
moons made a nice parallelogram pattern. Easily able to see the 2 equitorial belts.
I was hoping to make outthe Great Red Spot, but could not say for certain that I did.
Also looked at the moon for a bit. Crater Schickard was at the terminator, but seemed
to be totally in shadow.
After that tried to see if I could see M81 and M82. I could only barely make out the
core of M81 with the 6.7mm eyepiece. I was not able to make out M82 at all.
7/12-13/2019 11:00PM-12:30AM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 9/10, Seeing 4/5
Temperature: 70-80 degrees
Equipment: 10x50 binoculars
Not feeling too ambitious, so just did some quick variable star measurements.
Measured ST UMa, VY UMa, CI Boo and W Boo.
Also too a quick look at the moon, which was about 75% illuminated. MY hands were not
steady enough on their own so I did use a mop to stablize a bit. Noted crater Gassendi
and Sinus Iridium. I know I've seen these features before, so if I want to focus on
other features, would need to observe at a different phase.
One of the neighbor's dogs was also around looking for attention.
