Observing Log for Mike Durkin

9/25/16 about 8:30-11:00PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 7/10, Seeing: 3/5
Temperature: 50-60 degrees
Equipment: Canon Rebel T3i

DSLR photometry of g Her and P Cyg.
I also wanted to do CH Cyg, but there were too many wispy clouds. Note that some of the clouse were also in the P Cyg frames.

9/24/16 about 8:30-10:30PM
Location: Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, Jones Beach, NY
Transparency: 8/10, Seeing: 3/5
Temperature: 60-70 degrees
Equipment: Canon Rebel T3i

On the way to the beach had a bit of a minor scare, my car showed that the tire pressure was low so that delayed me a while while I had to find a gas station with a pump.
At the beach, I only had time to take about 10 light frames of the Elephant Trunk Nebula. I wanted more time, but Gene and George were wrapping things up and I didn't want to make them stay.

Here is the fimal image of the Elephant Trunk Nebula:

elephant_neb_01
Camera: Hutech modified Canon T3i
Lens: 75x300 zoom lens. Set at 200mm f/4.5
Exposure: 10x150s (25 minutes total)
ISO: 1600
Location: Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center at Jones Beach.
Processing: Maxim DL for calibration with dark and flat frames, and for stacking. Photoshop used for additional processing.

The flat frames didn't quite seem to do the job, there was vignetting that I wasn't able to fully eliminate, so I had to crop a bit more than I wanted.

9/16/16 about 7:00PM-10:00PM
Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay, NY
Transparency: 8/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: 60-75 degrees

AOS MAUS event at Sagamore Hill. Kind of a nice change since I had never been at this location before.
I was using a set of Vixen binoculars, 80mm and showing the moon to people. Even though the moon was full, most people enjoyed looking at it. We pointed out Tycho crater and the Sea of Tranquility to guests. I also occasionally pointed out that you could see that the edge of the moon was not perfectly smooth due to mountains and craters. We had to use moon filters on the 20mm eyepieces because it was so bright as well.
I would estimate the about 30-50 people looked through the binoculars. Some people also tried to take cellphone images through the eyepieces or images of themselves looking through the binoculars.
The overall consensus was that this was a good MAUS outing.

9/4/16 about 8:00PM-9:30PM
Locust Valley, NY
Transparency: 8/10, Seeing 3/5
Temperature: 65-75 degrees
Equipment: Hutech modified Canon Rebel T3i

DSLR photometry of P Cyg and R Lyr.
